We all want the same thing, productive traffic. The thought that someone followed a link from one website to ours is exciting and when that click turns into a person that interacts with out site we are very pleased.

Often when you are looking to promote a new site you just visit every free link source you know and submit url, title, descript and leave it at that. You are missing out on a prime source of quality links that will be spidered by the major search engines as well as get human surfers to your site.

Contact webmasters about reasonable and fair link exchanges. These often involve putting a link to them on your main page in exchange for a similar link. Many sites you visit have a “Partners” section where they put such link trades so if you see one then they are likely wanting to hear from you. Such link trades should be of equal value.

By equal value it should be kept in mind your site with a google PR of 1 might be turned down by another site when you are asking for a link on a PR 5 page. Most webmasters I have contacted want relevant link exchange of similar value and many want non-competing links as well.

Some sites owners will consider creative partnerships. From my site (link near top of this article) if you browse to forums then notice at the bottom of forums listing a section called “Hosted Partners Forums” with a “Go Get Links – Support” forum? This is a creative partnership between of my own sites. Many webmasters would find great value in trading traffic and links with partnerships like this.

This type of partnership allows you to have a place to promote yourself from a different domain and update information about your site. Every time you post in “your forum” you would also be increasing the links back to your site. This kind of partnership gives the host of your forum content so the site remains active and the search engine spiders stay interested.

There are many ways to develop linking strategies from one site to another the reason why you should take advantage of them is obvious when you search google for information. Most searches turn up a few forum post and articles on the first page of results. I know I often find relevant information when I follow a link to a forum post and then to another website.

Keep in mind that all the ideas suggested here are in no way intended to be high maintenance projects. These are just things you can take a day to do at a few sites and then revisit the more productive sites and add more as you see fit.

First you need the right equipment. What kinds of copies do you want to make, and what media are you going to be copying from? If your answer is VHS tapes, you’ll need the proper hookups in the back of your computer to accommodate a cable from the VCR. If you need backups primarily and you want to back up to DVD and to the Internet, you’ll need a high-speed hookup and a DVD burner. Make your list, and then take it to your computer store. You’ll almost certainly need to get a new computer; innovations today are leading to more and more robust computing technology, and you should have the best for your copying needs.

If you want to copy DVDs, you need to be aware of copyright restrictions. You absolutely must not copy DVDs for anything but your own personal use. To do otherwise is breaking the law. Instead of hoping this never happens, you should back up your hard drive regularly. The worst thing that could happen is that you’ll never need to restore a backup. The best thing: that when your hard drive crashes, you’ll have the backup to restore. It’s like a digital insurance policy.

If you own a small business and depend heavily on your computer – for instance, if you run a merchandise business and need accurate copies of orders and of inventory – you might want to consider data backups. You can back your data up on tapes, DVDs, CDs, or online; the best method by far is online, though. Subscription costs for online backups can be high, but if you’ve ever lost your data, you’ll agree it’s worth its price. Your company without data is like a boat without sails or anchor – adrift.

If you prefer not to use Internet backups, tape backups are reasonably cheap, easy to use, and very stable. They’ve been used for years, and it’s quite straightforward to recover data from a tape backup to your computer.

If you’re backing up your data, you do need to be aware of the proper methods; or if your computer autoexecutes the backup, you need to remember to leave the computer on.. And if you’re backing up, you should do it every night without fail; it won’t cost you any more, and it may save you a full day’s work.

Handling IT emergencies are critical to maintaining your customer base and a great opportunity to acquire new business. You cannot afford to staff up to every peak, nor can you afford to fail to meet the needs of an existing client.

Don’t Overschedule Your Staff

Generally, you want to schedule at about 75 percent capacity for technical people that don’t have sales responsibilities or management responsibilities. This leaves about 25 percent flexibility for non-billable projects, IT emergencies, and new business targets.

There will be peaks that you cannot meet. Then it is all-hands-on-deck and the ability to do triage among customers as well as for a single customer becomes important. This is the time when standardizing pays off

If you’re booking someone out in the field for a full day, schedule them eight to 11 in the morning and do the afternoon appointment from one to four. This leaves you some time.

Explain IT Emergencies To Your Clients

Also clients that you have long-term relationships with do understand when emergencies come up and will excuse a rescheduled maintenance appointment. After all, they want to know that you will respond to their IT emergencies too.

If you need to call them and tell them that you’re stuck at a client emergency–the server’s down, lightening struck, or there was a fire or whatever– most long-term clients are pretty understanding if you’re running an hour or two late. It really boils down to keeping the communications open, staying in contact with people, making best use of your resources and just don’t over schedule on the routine stuff.

The Bottom Line about IT Emergencies

The project work is a lot more predictable generally because you’re going to know the requirements a couple of weeks to a couple months ahead of time. Be sure to build some slack time into the schedule to accommodate IT emergencies.
